RoSA's Independent Sexual Violence Advisor Service
RoSA’s free and Independent Sexual Violence Advice Service (ISVA) will help you through the legal process.
If you decide to report an incident to the police, our qualified practitioner will be there every step of the way
• A free service offering practical and emotional support. • Someone to be there for you when attending police stations, courts, clinics or hospitals with explanations provided about legal and medical procedures • Regular contact with the police on your behalf concerning your case and support in making a statement • Advice on where to go for help with housing and benefits and accessing services • Home visits can be arranged • Talking to someone who understands helps. Nothing can change what has happened, but you can change how you feel now
ISVAs do not offer counselling, but will signpost victims to specialist services as necessary.
“Everyone who comes through RoSA’s door has had a harrowing and traumatic experience and unfortunately that trauma does not end because the sexual violence and abuse has stopped. Sometimes the experience is prolonged and worsened by going through a trial.
“RoSA’s ISVA service provides support to those going through difficult and stressful time, particularly through the criminal justice system. Ensuring someone is safe sometimes means working with them to develop effective coping strategies, access health or support services such as counselling, HIV or pregnancy testing. It may mean finding alternative accommodation if they are at risk at home.
“If a victim reports the crime, monitoring and tracking of a client’s case is a priority to ensure that they are kept up-to-date with progress from the Police or Crown Prosecution Service and Witness Services. Support at an early stage of the process can make all the difference to a victim’s ability or wish to proceed with the case, especially during video interviews. Supporting pre-court visits and providing regular case progress information are essential to make the whole process as uncomplicated as possible for the victim, ensuring they feel confident and can make informed decisions.
“This is a real opportunity to make a vital difference to the victims involved so that they have fair and equal access to justice for the crimes committed against them. By encouraging victims to engage with the criminal justice systems we can reduce rates of attrition and establish a greater success rate in convictions.
